🥚 The Boiled Egg Blueprint: Get the Timing Just Right for Any Yolk

Boiling eggs might sound simple, but getting them just right is an art form, and it all comes down to timing. First, fill a pot with enough water to cover your eggs, then bring it to a gentle boil. Once that water’s bubbling, carefully lower your eggs in. Now, here’s where the magic happens: the perfect egg is all about how long you let it cook!

For the soft-boiled egg lovers, where the yolk’s still a little runny and the whites are just set, you’ll want to keep it short and sweet—around 6 to 7 minutes. At 6 minutes, you’ll get that perfect creamy yolk that’s just begging for a toast dip. If you’re looking for a slightly firmer yolk but still a bit of that oozy magic, go for 7 or 8 minutes. But don’t forget - immediately after cooking, throw those eggs into an ice bath to stop the cooking process.

Now, if you’re on the other end of the spectrum and want those yolks cooked through, you’re looking at a little more time. For hard-boiled eggs, let them cook for 10 to 12 minutes, depending on just how firm you want that yolk. The longer they cook, the firmer they get, but don’t go too long, otherwise you’ll get that ugly green ring around the yolk (not the vibe we’re going for). Once done, plop them into an ice bath to cool them down and make peeling a cinch.

So whether you like your eggs soft or fully set, mastering the timing is key to making your boiled eggs a true kitchen win.

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way

John C. Maxwell

In the firehouse, leadership isn't about barking orders, it's about setting the right example and having the right intentions. Brandon Douglas, a seasoned firefighter and training chief, explores this in his article "Intention Over Action: Leading or Bossing?" He emphasizes that true leadership stems from selflessness and adaptability, not just from telling others what to do.

Douglas recounts a moment when his daughter, in a karate class, confidently declared that being a leader meant telling people what to do. Her instructor gently corrected her, explaining that leadership is about showing others what to do through action. Douglas reflects that both perspectives can be valid, depending on the context. In high-pressure situations, like a structure fire, clear directives are essential. However, in less urgent moments, leading by example can inspire the team to follow suit.

The crux of effective leadership lies in the intent behind actions. A leader's motivations should be selfless, aiming for the team's success and safety. Whether giving orders or demonstrating tasks, the underlying goal should always be the greater good. Douglas concludes that leadership is an art guided by science, requiring both thoughtful action and genuine intent.
