Athletes may swear by ice baths for recovery (including me), but your veggies and eggs love them just as much. In the kitchen, an ice bath (just a big bowl of ice water) is a simple trick to control doneness, lock in color and crispness, and make peeling a breeze.
❌ Stop the cooking in its tracks
When you blanch veggies (quick boil), dropping them straight into ice water halts the cooking immediately. That means crisp-tender broccoli instead of mushy broccoli, or green beans that stay snappy instead of flimsy.
🥚 Egg peeling made easy
Hard-boiled eggs plunged into an ice bath shrink slightly inside their shells. The result? Easy peeling and smooth whites.
🥕 Lock in bright colors
Carrots, beans, peas, asparagus… Chilling them after blanching keeps those vibrant, magazine-worthy colors.
👌 How to finish them
After the cold bath, your veggies will be chilled, but that’s where the magic starts. To serve them warm and flavorful, heat a pan with a little olive oil or butter, toss in your blanched veggies, and sauté for just 1–2 minutes. Add garlic, herbs, or a squeeze of lemon juice to finish. They’ll be perfectly tender, colorful, and seasoned without ever going soggy.
So next time you’re cooking, don’t just think about the heat; think about the chill. Your food deserves that refreshing post-workout dunk, followed by a tasty, flavorful sauté.

🔥 Kitchen Tool of The Week 🔥
I’ve gone through more cheap cutting boards than I can count. Warped edges, cracks, even ones that slid right off the counter mid-chop. But this one? It’s lasted through EVERYTHING, carving roasts for Sunday dinner, weeknight veggie prep, even messy BBQ nights. It’s the board I trust every single day, and it’ll outlast anything else in your kitchen too.
This is the cutting board I swear by, and the last one you’ll ever need to buy. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, you don’t want to miss this.

Lead
Teaching without credibility doesn’t just make you look foolish; it can get someone killed.
Authenticity in the fire service is eroding - what used to be an embodied, lived experience is increasingly reduced to image and performance. In his article “The Death of Authenticity In The Fire Service”, Jacob Johnson warns that when authenticity fades, the entire culture suffers: trust becomes transactional, training feels performative, and leadership rings hollow. Instead of living the values, firefighters risk treating them like a costume - outsiders or onlookers dressing the part rather than living it.
A critical issue highlighted is the fear of vulnerability. Many in the service feel compelled to appear confident and infallible, even when they lack the skills or knowledge necessary. This inhibits real growth. Leadership fails when it stops modeling and teaching the right way, simply criticizing without demonstrating.
Johnson makes a powerful point: the consequences of this decay aren't just about morale, they can cost lives. Social media personas and slogans don’t save people. Firefighting demands real competence, genuine leadership, and unwavering skill. One quoted firefighter from Jacksonville, FL, underscores that teaching without credibility (or teaching wrong things to those who trust you) can not only make you look foolish but can actually kill someone.
So… what can I do?
Reinforce Mentorship: Reinstate the “senior man” role, giving veterans formal opportunities to pass on hard-earned lessons. Leaders should demonstrate as much as they direct
Promote Depth, Not Just Credentials: Move beyond test scores. Let experience under pressure, ethical judgment, and leadership presence carry as much weight as formal qualifications
Encourage Open Conversation: Create firehouse cultures where questions like, “I don’t know, can you show me?” are welcome. This openness breeds real growth and builds psychological safety
Train like It Matters: Go beyond photo ops and hashtags. Drill basics (stretch lines, throw ladders, practice forcible entry) with the intensity and consistency of elite athletes preparing for the critical moment
Live the Brotherhood: Traditions aren’t just for quoting, they’re for living. Help your crew, tell the stories, honor retirees or fallen colleagues, not for show, but to pass down wisdom and purpose
Authentic leadership in the fire service isn’t about titles or aesthetics, it’s about lived experience, vulnerability, and deliberate practice. It asks leaders to teach, not just tell; to guide, not just manage; and to be real, always - especially when cameras aren’t watching.
