🧄 Let’s talk garlic.

Garlic is truly the heart of bold flavor. When you chop it, it releases allicin, a sulfur compound that’s behind its signature punch, adding sharp, savory notes to any dish. Raw garlic packs a bold, zesty kick, while cooked garlic takes on a sweeter, more mellow vibe. Beyond just adding flavor, garlic also helps stimulate your appetite with its aromatic compounds.

Although fresh garlic takes a little more effort to prep compared to jarred, it’s totally worth it. Fresh garlic brings a punch that jarred garlic just can’t match. While jarred is convenient, it often tastes milder, and can sometimes have a bit of bitterness from preservatives.

And if you’re stuck with garlic smell on your hands, just rub them against stainless steel (your sink, spoon, or a special stainless steel soap bar) under cold running water for about 30 seconds. It’ll neutralize those sulfur compounds and freshen up your hands in no time. Trust me, it actually works.

So, next time you’re cooking, skip the jar and let fresh garlic take your dish to the next level.

To truly innovate, we need to work together — across boundaries created by expertise, distance and status.

In her TED Talk, "How to Turn a Group of Strangers into a Team", Amy Edmondson, a Harvard Business School professor, delves into the concept of "teaming", the ability of individuals to come together swiftly and effectively to tackle complex challenges. She emphasizes that in today's fast-paced world, traditional, stable teams are often replaced by temporary, ad-hoc groups that must collaborate seamlessly under pressure.

Drawing from the remarkable 2010 Chilean mine rescue, Edmondson illustrates how a diverse group of professionals, including engineers, military personnel, and medical experts, overcame significant obstacles to save 33 miners trapped underground for 70 days. This success was attributed to key factors such as situational humility, curiosity about others' expertise, and a culture of psychological safety, where team members felt empowered to speak up, share ideas, and take risks without fear of judgment.

For the fire service, Edmondson's insights are particularly relevant. Firefighters often operate in dynamic, high-stress environments where team compositions can change rapidly. Embracing the principles of teaming (such as fostering psychological safety, encouraging open communication, and valuing diverse skills) can enhance collaboration and effectiveness during emergency responses. By cultivating a culture that prioritizes learning and adaptability, fire service teams can improve their ability to respond to crises and save lives.

Edmondson's talk underscores the importance of adaptability and collaboration in modern teamwork. By applying these principles, especially in high-stakes professions like firefighting, teams can navigate challenges more effectively and achieve extraordinary outcomes.
