In the fire service, we often talk about grit, readiness, and resilience, but those traits aren’t built in the comfort zone. When we train simply to “get through the drill,” we send the message: “just check the box and move on.” But when we allow controlled failure like errors, confusion, and the moment when someone doesn’t get it perfectly on the first try, we open the door to deep learning.

The training ground is a mirror for culture. If leaders jump in too quickly, fix mistakes before they’re even felt, or rush through drills to hit timelines, it communicates that training is a formality, not a value.
