🍗 You’ll Never Buy Store-Bought Chicken Broth Again After This…
Don’t toss out that leftover chicken carcass just yet. What’s left of that rotisserie or roasted bird is the secret to one of the most flavorful, versatile ingredients you can make at home: chicken broth. Instead of paying for store-bought cartons that are often thin and loaded with sodium, you can easily make your own rich, golden broth using scraps you already have. Simply toss the bones, skin, and any leftover bits into a large pot with water, onion, celery, carrots, garlic, peppercorns, and a bay leaf. Bring it to a gentle simmer for a few hours, skimming the top occasionally, and watch as it turns into a silky, aromatic base for soups, sauces, and countless other dishes.
Homemade broth isn’t just about flavor, it’s about value. You’re taking what would normally be kitchen waste and turning it into a powerhouse ingredient that adds depth to everything you cook. One chicken can easily yield several quarts of broth, which you can portion and freeze for later. It’s a small effort that pays off big, saving you money while giving your food that slow-simmered, from-scratch flavor you just can’t buy.
Once you start making your own, you’ll never go back to boxed broth again. It’s richer, more nourishing, and completely customizable. Add herbs for brightness, roasted bones for deeper flavor, or even a splash of apple cider vinegar to draw out more nutrients. It’s one of the simplest ways to cook smarter, waste less, and make every meal taste like it came straight from a professional kitchen. 👉 Watch how simple it is to make here.

Asking for help doesn’t make you weak, it makes you wise enough to know you’re worth saving.
Let’s talk about something that’s mission-critical but too often gets pushed to the back burner: the mental health of our first responders. You, me, and the whole team in the firehouse know that it’s not just the physical strain that wears us out, it’s the emotional load, the trauma, the sudden shift from high-adrenaline action to that quiet drive home, and the weight of responsibility we carry.
🧠 The Numbers Don’t Lie
A national meta-analysis found that among first responders the prevalence of depression is about 31% and anxiety about 32% - PMC
In a large state-wide survey of over 6,000 first responders in New York, more than half reported high levels of stress, burnout, anxiety or depression. Additionally:
~80% said stigma is a major barrier to seeking help.
~75% cited lack of mental-health providers who understand first‐responder culture as a barrier.
About 30% of first responders develop behavioral health conditions (like depression, PTSD) compared to ~20% in the general population - SAMHSA
Some data point out that first responders may be more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty - PowerDMS
❌ The Barriers & Culture
Here’s an uncomfortable truth: even when services are available, they don’t always get used. Why?
80% of first responders in one survey said stigma is a major barrier to seeking help.
72% worried about confidentiality — what if I reach out and it impacts my career? - NYGov
Many feel the provider “just doesn’t get it” — the firefighting mindset, the EMS urgency, the dispatch trauma. - CalmHealth
This culture of “tough it out” or “batch this for later” has to change. Because the truth is: the stronger we are inside, the better we can serve out there.
💪 Alright, what can we do?
I recently partnered with a phenomenal organization, Deemed Fit. Their athletic gear is next-level, but it’s their mission that really hits home. Built by first responders, for first responders, with a purpose that runs deeper than fitness:
“Our day jobs are in the law enforcement field, where we’ve been for over seven years. … We understand that these individuals need a little motivation sometimes to push them to their maximum potential, exceed their limits, and to be in the best physical and mental shape to keep the world afloat.”
That’s us. Whether you’re in the firehouse, on the ambulance, behind the shield, or with dispatch headphones on, your mental fitness isn’t optional. It’s operational readiness. It’s the difference between answering the call and coming home in one piece, mind included.
📣 Here’s how you can start:
Check in weekly: With yourself. With your crew. “How am I really doing?” is a valid question.
Peer-to-peer connection beats isolation. Coffee, walk, truck ride check-in.
Normalize it: When you talk about muscle soreness, same as you should talk about emotional fatigue.
Leverage programs built for you, not generic therapy. Tailored, peer-informed, first-responder focused.
Lead by example: Showing your humanity gives strength to those who’ve been quietly carrying their own weight.
The world relies on us. Our families rely on us. But guess what: we rely on us, too. The emotional scars don’t show like burns and bruises, but they’re there. They add up until they break the toughest among us. Together with Deemed Fit, we’re stepping into a space where mental health isn’t an afterthought, it’s front and center.
