šŸ”„ Here’s a little French secret that will take your kitchen experience to a whole new level…

Ever watched a chef glide through a kitchen and wondered, ā€œHow do they make it look so effortless?ā€ The secret isn’t magic, it’s mise en place, a French word for ā€œeverything in its place.ā€

Think of it like pre-game prep for your firehouse meals. Chop your veggies, measure your spices, portion your protein, and have sauces ready before the pan even hits the heat. When everything is set, cooking becomes faster, smoother, and way less stressful.

Here’s a quick hack I swear by: use muffin tins or small bowls to hold spices, herbs, or chopped aromatics. I use these ones from Amazon šŸ‘‰ļø every single time I cook (they also double as great food storage containers!). When you’re ready to cook, you just grab, sprinkle, and go. Bonus: your mise en place setup doubles as a visual check. You’ll see at a glance if you’re forgetting anything.

For firehouse life, this means meals are quicker, cleaner, and tastier, even after a long shift or when the tones drop the second your hot pans are ready. Start small: pick one recipe this week and prep every ingredient first. Your future self (and your crew) will thank you.

šŸ”„ This week, you need to make one of my favorite dishes šŸ‘‰ļø Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce & Green Bean Salad. It’s loaded with 69g of protein to fuel your crew and family, packs bold flavors from the peanut butter, red curry, and lime, and comes together in under 40 minutes. The tender, juicy chicken skewers paired with the crisp, tangy green bean salad make this not just a meal, but a firehouse-worthy experience your taste buds will thank you for. Quick to prep, easy to grill, and one you’ll very likely get asked to make again and again. This is one recipe that will make your week taste a whole lot better!

We studied what professional roofers are saying about gutter guard prices in 2025… and here’s what we found out.

Finding the best price comes down to just two simple things:

Cut out the middleman and get a solution that installs over your existing gutters in a day or less.

If done right, you can afford the best gutter guards along with increased property value and even a 100% no-clog guarantee.

You can learn all the basics and how to ā€˜skip’ the middleman with (fair) local pricing on this new website.

All feelings are welcome, but not all behaviors are.

Every Friday, my inbox gets a little jolt of wisdom from Robert Glazer’s Friday Forward e-mails. They’re short, punchy, and usually just what I need to reset for the week. Recently, one of his notes shared an idea from developmental psychologist Dr. Aliza Pressman that stopped me in my tracks, and it’s one that translates perfectly into the firehouse.

Dr. Pressman’s mantra is this: ā€œAll feelings are welcome, but not all behaviors are.ā€ Simple, powerful, and a reminder we could all use. Feelings are human, we don’t get to control what emotions hit us in the moment. But we do get to control what we do with them. That’s where maturity and responsibility come into play.

Think about it in the firehouse. Long shifts, high stress, and plenty of opportunities for clashing personalities mean emotions will boil over now and then. That’s normal. The key is what comes next. Do we blow up at our colleagues, slam lockers, or stew in silence? Or do we take a walk, cool down, and come back ready to talk it through? Same emotions, two very different outcomes.

As Dr. Pressman points out, problems arise at both extremes. In overly strict environments, people feel silenced and shut down, which kills trust and innovation. On the flip side, when everything goes unchecked in the name of ā€œjust expressing yourselfā€, standards collapse, respect fades, and the team unravels. In the firehouse, neither extreme works. We need a balance: space to be real with each other, but also clear guardrails to keep respect and professionalism intact.

Here’s the takeaway: ā€œAll feelings are welcomeā€ builds empathy. ā€œNot all behaviors areā€ enforces accountability. When we live by both, we don’t just create a stronger firehouse culture, we create teams you can count on under pressure. And that’s the kind of crew everyone wants beside them when the alarm drops.
